Planar Fasciitis; The Most Common Orthopedic Complaint

Person with Planar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most common orthopedic complaints.  The ligaments that connect your heel to the front of your foot and supports the arch of your foot helping you walk is called plantar fascia.

Plantar fascia ligaments experience a lot of wear and tear in your daily life.  Normally, these ligaments act like shock absorbers, supporting the arch of the foot.  Too much pressure on your feet can cause damage or tear the ligaments.  The result is an inflammation that cause heel pain, foot pain, and stiffness: Plantar Fasciitis.

The major complaint is usually on the bottom of the heal, but some people experience pain at the mid-foot area.  It usually affects one foot but can also affect both feet at the same time.

Some people describe the pain as dull whereas others experience a sharp pain.

The pain is usually the worse in the morning when you take the first steps out of bed, or if you have been sitting or laying down.  Climbing stairs can be a great challenge due to stiffness throughout the heel and foot.

Pain isn’t usually felt during activity but rather just after stopping.

What causes Plantar Fasciitis:

Obesity
Weight gain from pregnancy
Overuse (athletic endeavors)
Improper footwear (women’s heals)
Structural problems within the foot
